Fill level check

Why Perform Fill Level Inspection?

Minimum Contents Legislation

Legislation may dictate that the contents indicated on the container/label is the minimum to be in that container. Underfill inspection can help to control this.

Average Contents Legislation

In most countries legislation is based upon an averaging system derived from the contents indicated on the container/label. Under and over fill inspection can help to control average.

Customs & Excise

In instances of high duty products (i.e. spirits) Customs & Excise will firmly control overfilling as their duty calculation is based upon the contents indicated on the container/label. Overfill inspection can help to avoid Customs & Excise penalties.

Yield

Unnecessary overfilling is waste of valuable product. Manufacturing companies often judge performance by yield. Overfill inspection can assist in yield management.

Vacuity

Vacuity is another name for headspace (that is, the gap between the nominal fill level and the brim full capacity of the container) and is very important to allow for the expansion of the product in the container. This is especially important for products that are in corked containers and those with high levels of CO2. Overfill inspection can be used to protect vacuity.

Product Integrity (Pasteurising / Cooking)

Headspace is very important in any product which is to heat treated (pasteurised or cooked) as if the fill level is excessive it can stop the product moving within the container which may cause food products etc to only partially cook; or at an extreme overfilling can cause the container to deform or burst under heat treatment. Overfill inspection can be used to maintain headspace.

Aesthetics

Many products have a significant brand identity, and their appearance at the point of sale is important to the brand owner. Even when all packages fall within legal guidelines they may look different as the fill levels vary. Many brand owners use under and overfill to control the consistency of presentation of their product to the end consumer.

We offer a selection of products to examine fill level and monitor filling valves in the bottling and canning process.

All our inspection solutions can be customised to meet your precise requirements. We can also design and build bespoke inspection products.
